Attention Division 186 Members:
As many of you are aware, employees enrolled in the Tier 6 retirement plan have faced concerns regarding excessive contribution rates and inequitable pension formulas compared to earlier tiers.
The "Tier 6 Quick Fix" is an important legislative initiative aimed at bringing fairness to Tier 6 by addressing some of the most critical issues members are facing today.
The Quick Fix proposes the following immediate improvements:
Faster Vesting: Reducing the time required for pension vesting from 10 years to 5 years — in line with Tier 5.
Fairer Contributions: Capping the maximum member contribution rate at 6%, rather than the current sliding scale of up to 6%, 6.5%, or more depending on salary.
Pension Calculation Improvements: Ensuring that the final average salary (FAS) calculation uses the highest three consecutive years, eliminating pension penalties due to overtime limits or non-consecutive earnings.
Without these fixes, Tier 6 members continue to contribute more, wait longer for benefits, and receive proportionally lower pensions compared to earlier retirement tiers.
Fixing Tier 6 means protecting the future retirement security of public employees and ensuring fairness across generations of workers.
Stay informed through Division 186 and PEF updates.
